A mental health guide by Shraddha Menon(special thanks to Mansa Sukheja , a counselor in training, for their time and knowledge in curating this article)
Congratulations if you are reading this! This is your first step towards building a beautiful mind. Human brain is complex .While most of us don’t understand it’s chemical reactions, we certainly experience it. It’s therefore necessary to build a support system that benefits our growth. Who has asked you to do it all alone anyway? So, open your eyes wide enough because I am going to help you form one.
Therapist or Psychiatrist?
If you can identify your need, a therapist should be your go to. There are online portals like Therapize India which can help with same. But it is recommended that one should initially approach an experienced and trusted professional. The initial few sessions can then be used to determine if you need specialised help. It a professional’s ethical responsibility to help an individual find their help.
Red Flags?
Therapy is all about goodness of fit. If one feels the relationship is working out of for them and they continue to resolve challenges then they should continue with the same professional. Even trying out different approaches over a period of time is helpful. However, if one feels stagnant in their therapy, then they should find another professional.
What if I can’t access?
Relational resources are integral to human survival and well being. In therapy an adult without familial support can choose to employ a trusted friend to be informed in case of extremities. A persons time in therapy can be used to focus on communicating their needs to the family and explaining the importance of therapy.Therapy is for anyone who needs help. And if one does, they should not be denied it
because of their socio-economic/political status. Mental Health care is a basic human right. You can seek it either from a private or government institution but what’s more important is to take the first step of asking for help.
