"The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.” ~ Abraham Maslow.
Our health is very important. It is that we only have a narrow definition of it. Keeping ourselves fit is just controlling our sense of taste but what about the rest of the 4 senses? The things we see, hear, feel and smell, can they be kept in check just as seamlessly? The challenge to keep ourselves sane is a bigger one.
Junk in and junk out. On an average day, we give at most an hour to consuming our meals and sure we can regulate what we eat and keep ourselves fit. But to keep a check on what we think and feel requires a great deal of effort. All the ringing phones, incoming mails, frequent deadlines, binging web series and insane amounts of multitasking music, etc keep our brains occupied all the time. We feed our brains so much unnecessary information that soon enough we start uttering unnecessary information. And that's when it occurs to us that we have mental health issues.
In all the career and life madness we have forgotten the bliss of doing nothing. The most impossible thing in one’s life may as well be doing nothing. When was the last time we did nothing? I am guessing a life with no phones, no music, no talking, nothing. Just take out the “spice” of life and be there, letting our thoughts flow. Taking the time to just… observe. In the daily hectic schedules just take time to relax and create a state of flow. Something that’s effortless. Like cooking (or even boiling water if that’s all one can do), like watching the birds fly, like repetitively jumping rope, like meditating, anything close to nothing. Let the world be and observe it. You may feel a little better.
